Community Need – The Challenge

“Please let the Hands to Honduras people know that the school really needs this classroom…the other day a microscope was stolen from the school because there is no place to keep this equipment…they need this room to keep everything locked up and secure.”

Hands to Honduras Response

Hands to Honduras built a classroom (25’ x 27’) equipped with electric wiring to be used as a science laboratory for natural science, chemistry and biology. This was undertaken by the Hopkinton, NH Interact Club (Rotary District 7870) with 15 students and 8 adults. Funds for the entire project were raised and paid by this group. Accomplished re-roofing the library wing with new jalousie windows, refurbished the check-out desk and painted the library walls, painted the entire exterior walls around the school yard as well as the inside and outside of the new wing constructed last year. The group also installed security wiring on all windows.

Community Participation

“Already 40 students, 25 parents, and two qualified teachers in construction have committed to help… and the community says they will help – they just need to know when and where.” Labor, for construction and maintenance will be performed by community and school staff. Many volunteers worked at Triunfo School last year – it was a very welcoming community and a good atmosphere.

Project Thoughts & Considerations

In this Garifuna community, which is the poorest of the poor, this project will benefit 745 high school students and during the evening will be used for adults who want to complete their secondary education.
